Audi Repair: Electrics and Revs, oil gauge, pocession

Question
Hello Again,

Sorry about this, it's a long one!

I haven't got the car in my pocession at the moment so from memory, I think the code is ECP it comes on when you first start the car (near where the oil gauge is).
So yes, the car runs, but won't go past 2000 revs.
The car starts fine and then this code come back on and according to the Audi manual that came with the car it says if this happens then the engine has gone into back up mode and needs to go to a dealer straight away.
The mechanic towed it to a garage and had it linked to a computer but no errors have shown up.  Everyone seems to be baffled!
He spoke to an Audi mechanic who told him sometimes they get cars in for a service and sometimes this happens to him (which does not impress me at all, is this a common fault with certain cars I wonder?!?!?)
I've another friend that works for Lexus and works on other cars too and is betting his life on it that it's the cam belt that's causing the problem and that it still hasn't been fitted right.  He told me even if the cam belt is 1/2 a tooth out, it can cause problems with the revs.

It's a friend of my father-in-laws that has fitted it, but he is a well experienced mechanic by trade, and a good one (he used to have his own garage).  When first asked if he could do the job, he said "no problem".  He works for the AA but also works on other cars ALL the time.
I just feel sorry for this guy, he's at his whits end, I'm also desperate as I really do need my car back.
I am located in Sale, Cheshire

I told you it was a long one - sorry.  Any help is greatly offered and if you need more info, just let me know.

Vicky

Hi Gary,

I have an Audi A4 1.8, year of registration 2000.
Current mileage is approximately 59,250

You have answered a question for me recently but I have found out some more information so I hope you don't mind but I just wanted to put it to you again.

I have had my cam belt changed and now my car won't work.  Basically a warning light is coming up, which tells me there is something wrong with one of the sensors and the engine has gone into a backup mode and needs to be seen by an Audi expert.  The car will not go past 2000 revs.  The engine has been linked up to a computer and no faults are being found, everything is ok.
Obviously not though and everyone that is looking at it are completely baffled.  Can you help, I as the owner am desperate, I need my car back, I've been without it for days now and I can't cope.

Hopingly

Vicky

HI
what light is ON? does it run or not?  If your MIL is ON there has to be fault in system. make sure the belt is on the way it has to be .
Who did the work, dealer?
I don't think there is any back up  mode on engine with out MIL light.
By the way where you locate?

Answer
hey
I have seen  a lot longer stories from other people, so your's is nothing, OK?\
EPC not ECP, it standsfor engine power control . I have seen a few with the same problem and we had to replace ECM
But, first make sure your throtlle body is connect ( discconected, look into connector, make sure it looks OK and plug it back in. Reset faulf, if there is any and start the car. Sometimes the throtlle body needs to be adapted ,but you need VAG or something that works with audi or VW. If your mechanic has VAG go to engine (01 ) than basic settings ( 04 ) and than 060 , this is how to adapt throttle. It may help but I not sure.
GOOD LUCK>        pltech
