Audi Repair: Hydraulic Lifters -- 2002 Audi A6 Quattro, audi a6 quattro, hydraulic lifters

Question
Greg,

Thanks for the quick response.  The problem was a coil spring that held a valve closed failed and thus the valve was open allowing the piston to hit the valve.  After constant banging, the valve head bent.  I took it to the Audi shop here in Las Vegas, and they were clueless.  They had the car for six weeks and could not diagnose the problem.  I then took it to a shop specializing in German automobiles.  The shop told me that Audi recommended that the hydraulic lifters should be replaced during any and all engine valve work.  There is no extra labor included, just the cost of the parts.  They also recommended replacing the thermostat, water pump and timing belt.  Engine is a 3.0L.  Thanks again.

I was recently informed that the valves in my engine were bent.  The repairman who is fixing the problem stated that it is recommended that I replace the hydraulic lifters, thermostat and water pump in the engine as well.  My question is two part: a) do I need to follow this recommendation; and, b) is the quoted price of $1,140 USD to replace the hydraulic lifters too expensive?  The car is a 2002 A6 with 68,000 miles on it.  Thanks in advance for your help.

I  like to know what happen to the engine? Is not easy bent valves with 68K on the car.
If car has 68,000 miles and timming belt is off the car, it is VERY good idea to replace termostat, water pump and timming belt roller. But lifters???? I have no idea and that's why I want to know what happened.
I don't know where you live and what will be cover under 1,140 USD , but if the whole thing will cost you only that much I think smebody is not telling you the whole thing.
If you go to audi dealer:for example
t-belt , water pump, termostat, rollers and coolant flush will cost you about anywhere from 1,500 to 1,900 USD
I live in New Jersey, US.
Please, let me know what was the problem with your A6 and what engine do you have 3.0 or 2.7 or 4.2
thanks   GREG

Answer
HI
I was thinking over what you wrote whole day and i don't know what to write back.........I'm very suprise that Audi dealer was clueless, because I do work for one of them. I thing I'm clueless TOO..........
I only seen 1 valve spring failure and that was on old TOYOTA with almost 200,000 miles.
We did replace valves, pistons , camshafts and whole engines but never lifters.
If that's what the problem is , fine just make sure that they replace spring that coused all the problem
IF THAT HAPPEN TO MY CAR i WILL PRBOBALY REPLACE ONLY SPRING AND VALVE THAT IS DAMAGED.
To replace Valve, the cylinder head has to come off, and you have to replace head gasket and bolts. And  I will replace or install new T-belt, water pump  and termostat, that is the right way plus you almost there to replace those parts anyway. We do replace them between 60 to 80,00 miles.
If the whole thing is gona be 1,140 usd I will go for it , just make sure you see all the new parts on your bill.
You can also tell them to save old patrs.
Good luck ,   GREG
