Auto Airbag System Repair: Air bag system modification, ford explorer sport trac, ford explorer sport

Question
A friend of mine has two children and two on the way she owns a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. She will need to have the right side air bag disabled in order to put a child in that seat. I am a mechanic and can get a disable switch from the auto wreckers from a ranger or f150 but I would need to know how to properly wire it into the Sport Trac. Any advice or direction on the wiring diagrams would be a great help.

Thanks John

Answer
Hi John:

This one is a bit risky.
I'm not comfortable describing how to bypass an airbag over the internet using salvage parts.  There are too many issues that come up for me and too many opportunities for an error that can cause harm to you, your friend or her children.
I would suggest you obtain a new bypass switch from companies that still sell them and follow their directions carefully.  Personally, I would not just stick a switch in from another vehicle.  All of the airbag have varying resistance and depend on a proper signal for the airbag computer to operate the remaining bags correctly.  If you use a wrong switch, with the wrong impedance, you can damage the entire system or worse, cause an accidental deployment.
Here is a link to a company I just grabbed off the web that still sells new bypass switches.  I strongly urge you to go that way.
