Auto Airbag System Repair: ai8rbag light, nissan infinity, mercury sable

Question
I have a 2000 mercury sable the airbag light is on,i counted the flashes and it comes to code 47 any answers

Answer
Hi John:

A Code 47 on your vehicle is a bad seat belt buckle pretensioner circuit on the passenger side.
B1886 47 Passenger Pretensioner Circuit Resistance Low

Typically the repair requires replacing the buckle assembly.  Don't be alarmed if once you replace it you get a code 46 or code 19.  The system only reports one code at a time using the flash codes.  A scanner would return all the fault codes.  (Those other codes are for the left buckle and then for the control unit.)
What I am saying, is if it is not simply a component failure, you may have had a seat belt buckle deployment requiring additional components be replaced also.

Here's a site that will explain everything you need to know about airbag systems, airbag lights and resetting the system.  It shows you the location of the components and the procedure for diagnosing and/or resetting airbag light.  Not all vehicles need everything replaced.

Airbagsolutions.com also has the fault code charts to tell you what is wrong!
Some vehicle manufacturers let you access and reset systems without a scanner (like Toyota, Lexus, Nissan, Infinity, Honda, Acura, Ford, Lincoln, Mazda & Mercury) and some require a scan tool.  Although it’s a pay site ($14.95/day), it’s a lot cheaper than going to the dealer.  You will need a subscription if you want to view the fault code chart.

I hope I’ve helped you
