Auto Electronics: Fuseable link, ford ranger xlt, protective sheathing

Question
i am trying to locate the fusible link between the battery and the brain on a 2000 ford ranger xlt super cab with a 4.0 v6 and would like to know the color and location if possibly.

Answer
Hello Adam,

A fusible link is a heavy gauge wire that goes from one electrical point to another.  The colors vary depending on the vehicle and the application.

With a Fusible Link, what many people do not know is that the WIRE ITSELF is the FUSIBLE LINK.  Many people look for a wire with a fuse somewhere on it, however, this is not a fusible link those are inline fuses.

To find a bad fusible link you need to go to the start point "in you case this would be the battery" and follow the wire to its end point "In your case the brain or ECM (Computer)"

Given what your looking for the wire will most likely be Solid Red or Red and Black combination and is most likely inside of some kind of a protective sheathing and branches off from the main battery harness to the computer, probably through a few different sheathing protectors containing various other wires.

To test if a fusible link is bad or broken "BLOWN", you will need to pull on the wire, if it feels and/or remains stiff and solid, it is good and the fusible link is intact, however if it gives or has play, it is bad and needs to be replaced.

Please keep me informed of your progress, and let me know if i can be of further assistance to you.

Good Luck.

Thank you.
