Auto Electronics: Powertrain Control Module (pcm), powertrain control module, powertrain control module pcm

Question
I replaced the PCM on a 2000 Saturn SL1. The part and serv. numbers are identical. Now the car turns over but wont start. Its getting spark and fuel. Where should I look next?

Answer
Hello Jeff, the first thing that comes to mind would be that the PCM needs to be reprogrammed. Sounds like you found a used unit and just replaced it. Any time the PCM is replaced, the new module needs to be programmed to match the new vehicle and pass-lock anti theft system. More than likely the fuel injectors have been disabled by the PCM and this is causing the no start. The used PCM tries to communicate with the pass-lock system but will not fire the injectors because it still remembers the values from the old vehicle! You will need to find a shop with a Tech 2 scanner and access to GM service website to reprogram the PCM and run relearning procedures. Good luck. Don.
