Auto Electronics: 1978 porsche 928, starter solenoid, porsche 928

Question
when starting, the ignition must be flicked backto on before engine will crank. had starter bench checked and was told to wire from coil+ to solenoid but engine wanted to run w. start engaged.  is it the switch?

Answer
Sounds like you have to try twice to get the starter to engage. If this is the case I would indeed check the switch first. If it is a column mounted switch, make sure the lock cylinder and linkage to the switch are in good working order. If this doesn't fix it, time to break out the voltmeter. Check for 12 volts coming out of the switch and 12 volts at the starter solenoid when the key is turned to start. If you still have a problem check the wiring. As you already found out, running a wire from the coil positive terminal to the starter solenoid will make the starter run any time the ignition is hot! Not good for the starter drive. Hope this helps, good luck, Don.
