I have a 98 Deville with a northstar engine.While driving the dash lights flashed on /off dang thing died .Got a jump acted like no fire. Finally started while idling dash read service charging system. Car then shut down. Got another boost again ran for about 3 minutes and died! Is my problem an alternator

Answer
Put a voltmeter to the positive and negative cables at the battery with the engine running. You should have a minimum of 13.2 volts. Anything less it is not charging. When charging the GM alternator puts off a signature scream you will hear with the hood open.
