Vacuum pumps were used on diesel engines because the diesel does not emit vacuum.
As for braking assist, vacuum was not used on diesels and diesels had the crappy hydraulic hydr-boost.

On gas engines there was enough vacuum from the engine that a pump was not needed and one vacuum line was sent directly from the engine to the vacuum assisted power brake booster at the master cylinder.

Vacuum pumps on gas engines were for the heater and ventilation doors and did not apply to the braking system.
