Cadillac Repair: ignition lock cylinder, key of the proper type, last key used

Question
QUESTION: hello how do i remove the lock cylinder on m89 cadillac eldorado?

ANSWER: Hi,

I am curious why you ask. Is the lock just turning and nothing is happening? The reason I ask is that was a very common problem with that column. The rod/rack would break and the gear would fall off the back of the ignition lock cylinder. Is this a T&T or does it have an air bag?

QUESTION: no air bag the gear on the back will not totally engage the flat thing it's supposed to turn i can start the car by pushing it all the way with a flat screw driver

ANSWER: Hello,

Now, you have to deal with my foggy memory here because this was not the standard GM Saginaw. Everything was backwards on these. The locking mechanisms wee on the left side of the common Saginaw that could be defeated in 30 seconds. GM went with your style as an experiment, making the locking mechanisms on the right side just like the square columns of that era. It was all stupid. In other words, few knew how to service the column you have and I flat out did not like working on them. With all that said, I need to know if the flat piece with the teeth is in good shape and still attached to the rod you are pushing down to start the engine.
After re-reading your complaint, you need to see if you can get a Rod and Rack assembly for this. Cadillac only and they may still stock it.
I also did not ask you if it had a chip in the key and I need to know that as well.

You need a steering wheel puller and a lock plate compression tool. (Parts stores rent these).
Remove the horn pad. Either has screws on back of steering wheel or pops off. Disconnect horn wire by pushing on black plastic barrel and slightly turning. Remove three screws form telescopic. Use a needle nose inserted into the two holes on the telescopic bolt and unscrew. When loosing by hand, use a rag. Its sharp. It will cut you. Remove the 13/16 steering wheel bolt. Remove the steering wheel making sure the notch on the wheel and the notch on the shaft are in line.
Remove the lock plate. I do not remember if this style incorporated at snap ring, or a cover over the c clip. If it has a plastic cover over the c clip, be very careful prying it upward, because they are brittle and not available any more. If that style, with the lock plate compressed, slide c clip out with a screw driver. You will understand when you are looking at it. If C clip, pay attention to direction because it won't slide into the notch in the shaft upside down. Remove 3 turn signal screws. Remove the turn signal pivot screw and pivot.. pull the switch upward. Forget to tell you to remove 4 way flasher on outside of column with small Phillips.

remove the plastic key buzzer by bulling straight up. Remove little black spring steel for key buzzer from hole. Using a #20 torx, remove the lock cylinder hold down screw. Remove lock. If gear is still attached fantastic! If not, I need to know if this is a chipped key. It will be a big black ugly thing on the key blade.

Once you get a rod & rack assembly, the fun begins!

Get back to me when you get that far.

QUESTION: grey. so i can't get the turn signal plate out of the way and i can't find the torx screw you speak of. i took pic. se if you can guide more from here. thanks.

Answer
Hello,

Don't need to ask you if it's got the ugly black resistor in the key any more. It does. I can see the wires.

Cadillac only used the so-called anti theft in the 89 Sevilles and Eldos and it wasn't on the Deville until 1990.

The torx screw holding the lock is located under that white tab of the key buzzer below the lock. You can take a needle nose and grab the white plastic key buzzer. Wiggle it up and down slightly pulling upward. Once removed pull out the black spring steel piece out of the key buzzer hole. remove the retaining torx screw for the lock and pull the lock out of the steering column.
You can call to 866-490-1673 until 5 CDT.
The fun has only begun-lol!
