Question
QUESTION: Im not sure if you will know or not but my dads 2006 chevy ssr wouldn't start. He got it started and my brother drove back to work with the check engine light on. It broke down again when he got to work. Now the check engine light is still on and  another light came on and it says power failure. Thanks for any help.

ANSWER: Hello,

The check engine light is telling you there is an emissions problem. In this case the emissions problem is serious enough to cause the engine to run bad, stall and not restart.
This is a hard code and if a service center plugs in an electronic scanner the Tech II or equivalent, there will be diagnostic codes retied. These diagnostic codes will indicate if a sensor(s) failed, or possibly the computer is bad. You won't know until a diagnostics is performed.
These systems are complicated and integrated. All sensors for the engine and transmission have to function for the best drivability and gas mileage.

Now, if you were driving down the road and the check engine light went on and then off, that is known as a soft code. The engine will run rough whenever the light is on.

With the check engine light staying on, it is a serious electronic failure of some sort. If the engine continues to run with the check engine light on like you describe and if running rich and dumping gas into the O2 (oxygen) sensor and it will need replaced and possible further damage would be the caralytic converter.

You don't have to go to the dealer for this. One of the larger service centers in your area should be able to diagnose.

QUESTION: This truck is hard to crack. Here are the codes I pulled. The codes are c0300 p0102 p0443 and p1682. Yesterdaythe truck started and I drove it for 20 minutes. I tried starting it an hour later and the engine would crank but wouldnt fire off. The fuel pressure is good. I also erased the codes. It came up with an abs light error one was the abs the other was the parking brake and it said service brake system I tested the booster it was fine and I checked for leaks no leaks. It also sounds like something is whistling under the hood. Any ideas. The battery is good napa checked it. Them and autozone couldnt test the alternator. Thanks.

ANSWER: Hello,

If you have a whistle under the hood when running, it could possibly be a vacuum leak and that is all it would take to set off the codes. As I said, everything is integrated. One simple problem can set off a cascading effect.

Let me know what you end up finding.

QUESTION: What should I look at when I am checking the vacuum. The whistle almost sounds like the throttle body is whistling is that possible. Thanks.

Answer
Hello,

The throttle body could have an internal leak, or it could be the base plate gasket that mounts it to the manifold.

Really don't know how it works on computer cars, because the computer may try to compensate, but we very carefully would spray carb cleaner along the base plate. If the RPMs pick up, there is your vacuum leak. If not, try down the throttle body. You will find it.
