Question
Hello - after recently putting a few hundred dollars into my beloved Caddy (replaced water pump, starter, and fuel pressure regulator), now my oil pressure light keeps coming on when I hit the break.  I just got an oil change today, but it didn't help. Could it be the oil pressure sensor? If so, where IS it so I can replace it? Everything I've seen indicates it's above the oil filter, but I can't see it. Thanks!

Answer
Hello,

I instead of guessing and you should not be guessing here, take the car into a local service garage and have then install an oil pressure gage an see what you have for oil pressure. Commonly, the oil light comes on when damage is occurring already at 4 psi. If you had a sending unit problem, I don't believe the light would be coming on just at idle. Your description leads me to believe you have either a bad oil pump or possibly bad bearings-main, rod or cam.
The only way you will know for sure is to have a mechanical gage installed into the engine block.

GM used to make a product called EOS (Engine oil Supplement) we would put in engines to mask the problem, or you could try 30w oil, but bottom line from your description, I would have concern about real oil pressure. Shouldn't cost but $30-$40 to have peace of mind. That way, you also will find out exactly where the oil sending switch is. I have seen them go bad, but rarely and usually the light will come on going down the highway as well.

Don't guess! Have it checked now before you find the engine knocking and it is definitely too late.

You cannot find these engines used! They have usually been over heated and junk!

Good luck an let me know the results.
