Question
I am getting codes 39 (TCC Engagement Problem) and then Code 52 ( ECM Memory Reset Indicator)

The problem I was having was while driving on the interstate my service soon (yellow light) would come on and then go off several times, when I exited from the interstate on to residential streets of course driving under 45 mph it didn't come on at all.

Answer
Hello,

You are having what is known as a "soft" code in your emission system. A hard code is where the light stays on constantly and is a more immediate problem.

What this means to you--it is not a safety concern, however it will effect the efficiency of the engine. The computer system when the light is on is not in full loop and means the engine may not run properly when the light is on. Your fuel mileage will suffer and if you are subject to an emission test, you will not pass. You could also create a cascade of additional problems. Let's say it is a bad Map sensor. This could cause the engine to run rich and over time taking out the oxygen sensor as an after affect to the original problem the Map sensor.
In your case, the code 52 could be causing the code 39 or vice versa.

This is a very primitive system and the standard used today is the OBD II (On Board Diagnostics)was first used by GM in 1994.
GM first started using computers in the second half of 1980 to illustrate how old this system is in yours. Now there is pin point accuracy, while back then, the tech only knew the general location of the problem.

I would also suggest checking Ebay or Craigs for a factory service manual for the car so you or someone you know can do these minor issues and save you lots of money. The manual will walk you through your codes without changing parts that don't need to be changed. Don't try fixing this on a guess!

As for the 39 and the 52, it's been far too long for me to remember. Even though I worked on these new.

These were nice cars and relatively maintenance free if you did not overheat the engine. They are not real difficult to work on and a factory service manual guides you through most everything.

Good luck!
