Cadillac Repair: Cant shift out of park, gearshift, novice

My gearshift won't shift out of park unless you manually release it but once released it works fine the brakes work and everything else does so what could keep it from releasing the gear shift?

A misadjusted or defective park cable. You will need to have it looked at by a service center and either adjustment or replacing a cable is not something a novice wants to do. In fact, I got to the point I refused to work on these cables. That is what employees are for.
