QuestionQUESTION: hi. sometimes my 81 cadillac fleetwood brougham de elegance 4-6-8 6 litre wont start.. it fires and barely runs for a split second and stalls.. after letting it sit for 30 minutes or more it fires up.. then it runs crappy for a bit and then runs awesome...please help my caddy feel and run better... not too sure if its getting too much or not enough fuel... i just got the caddy four months ago and the last owner is deceased.. so no luck in asking him past running history...also its hard to diagnose this problem when it doesnt do it all the time, so a mechanic can see what the problem is... thank you - Dano -
ANSWER: IS or HAS the CHECK ENGINE light ever illuminated while driving the vehicle and or has any other lights illuminated or any messages from the message display center ?.
What work or diagnostics of ANYKIND WHAT-SO-EVER have been performed on the vehicle trying to fix this problem ?.

QUESTION: thank you for your speedy response to my question...
as for any repairs being done to the cadillac regarding this problem,no repairs have been done as of yet... no check engine lights are on when this happens... and no check engine lights are ever on while driving... other than the starting problem, the caddy runs awesome...

AnswerTry this test:
Here is a test procedure to see if the fuel pump works when your problem occurs.
1. Remove the gas cap.
2. Listening very carefully with your head out the door and getting as close to the ground and listening at the gas tank.
3. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position ONLY, Do NOT try and start the engine. You should be able to hear the electric fuel pump motor run for only 2 seconds and then it will stop.
4. If you can hear it run for the 2 seconds and then stop, You do NOT have a fuel pump problem.
(a) If you do NOT hear the fuel pump run for the 2 seconds and stop then the fuel pump is faulty and requires replacement.
5. If the fuel pump is OK, You need to check for spark to the spark plugs.
