Cadillac Repair: 1997 SLS rear caliper retraction, rear caliper, inner pad

Question
Hi Rob. I'm a nurse, not a mechanic, but do enjoy doing what I can. I'm replacing rear pads, but cannot squeeze the piston into the caliper sufficiently to reattach over new pads. How do I get the piston retracted? Thanks in advance! Jeff

Answer
Hello,

What I have done is leave the old inner pad in the caliper. Then I would use a large C Clamp like wood workers use, you might be able to rent one from Auto zone. Screw it in until the piston is flush.

The other problem you need to be aware of is that the bushings on the ears of the caliper may keep you from getting the caliper on. This is where the bolts go. Make sure the bushings are tapped out far enoough that you can mount the caliper/

Good Luck!

Rob
