Cadillac Repair: 1991 Cadillac Sedan DeVille, cadillac sedan deville, neighborhood street

Question
This is an occasional problem. Sometimes the car runs perfect. Sometimes it acts like an old carburated vehicle with a choke that is stuck shut. When driving down the neighborhood street, it will just die(mostly at stop signs), even after driving it for quite while and it is good and warm....no chugging, no sputtering...it just quits. It's like somebody just turns the key off except the lights stay on.
Sometimes after I recrank it, I shift it into gear but it doesn't go into gear right away. Sometimes I have to wait several seconds with the engine at idle, and all of a sudden it just SLAMS into gear. Also, after cranking it, I can leave it in Park, and if I gradually raise the RPM a bit and then release it, when the RPM drops back down to idle, the car acts like it jumps out of gear, and lurches a few inches.
It's dangerous in that it dies at the most worst times.

Answer
IS or HAS the CHECK ENGINE light on the dash ever illuminated while driving the vehicle ?.

If NOT, This sounds like a common problem of a carbon buildup within the throttle body and EGR chambers in the intake manifold.

As for the transmission, When was the last time you had the fluid and filter replaced in the transmission ?.
