my 1981 cadillaac is spitin and sputtering itdont want to take off right but when i get to speed it works fine what do i do to fix it my only car with a new born

IS or has the CHECK ENGINE light ever illuminated while driving the vehicle ?.

Possibilities are:

fuel pump.

ignition system.
