Cadillac Repair: 2000 Eldorado Air Conditioning, intermittent operation, fan operation

My AC fan stopped working suddenly.  This was preceded by two days of intermittent operation (started, then stopped, then started again) followed by a "pop" in the dash and a small amount of smoke on both sides of the firewall.  All control panel indications are good.  Simply no fan operation. Fan motor or electronic control?  I want to do the work myself but, it looks like the car engine is in the way of removing the fan from the housing.
