Cadillac Repair: 1993 Cadillac STS 4.6L A/C issuues, torque converter clutch, torque converter clutch solenoid

Question
QUESTION: I recently replaced the engine with a 4.6 liter (from a 1994 Eldorado).  I have two issues.  1.  Code PO39 (Torque Converter Clutch Malfunction) appears when I'm on the highway (specifically driving on a gradual incline at appx 60 mph).  2.  New A/C compressor and fully charged yet A/C doesn't kick on.  Any thoughts on this?

Thanks.

Steve

ANSWER:  Is this the ONLY code you are getting ?.

Are BOTH engines 4.6L ?.

Did you try clearing the code from the computer ?.

Try this test:

1. While maintaing your speed of 60 mph on an incline, use your left foot and slightly apply the brake pedal and see if you feel a slight BUMP as well as the engine speed increasing.

Remove your left foot from the brake pedal and you should feel another bump with a DECREASE in engine rpm's.

Try this several times. It is most important that you do NOT increase or decrease your engine speed with your right foot on the gas pedal.

QUESTION: Yes, both engines are 4.6 liter.  I cleared the codes and don't experience a slight Bump applying the break pedal.  This is the only code (P039) I am getting.  Any further thoughts.

Thank you for your help and time.

Answer
The TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SOLENOID on the transmission valve body has DIED and requires replacement. Once replaced, You need to CLEAR (erase) the code from the computer via the climate control panel. Disconnecting the battery will NOT clear the code.
