1996 Cadillac air conditioner turned off by the computer could the refrigerant be low? and if it is can it be recharged without the compressor running?

Try pushing DEFROST and see if the compressor cycles ON and OFF.

If it DOES, You have a leak in the system that requires an electronic leak detector to locate it OR you can add freon to the system via a set of AC gages and drive the vehicle and see how long the AC works.

Is or HAS the check engine light ever illuminated on the dash ?
