Cadillac Repair: question about my 92 cadillac el dorado, spark plug wires, spark plug wire

i had a question when i drive my car for a long time or drive it a far distance it tends to shut off and the power steering gets really hard to steer so i would have to stop the car put it in park then turn the car off an turn it back on and i have no idea what it could be because me and my boyfriend thought that all it needed was a tune up b/c the spark plugs were really bad but about a week after havig the tune up it still shuts off so if you would have any idea could  you please let me know thank you

The next time this occurs Check for spark from one of the spark plug wires to the spark plug  by removing the spark plug wire from any spark plug and hold the spark plug wire about 1/4 inch from any metal surface as someone tries to start the car and see if you see a spark jump from the spark plug wire to the metal surface. If you DO have spark, Plug the spark plug wire back onto the spark plug wire and spray  some starting fluid from an aerosol can that you can purchase at any auto parts store into the aor cleaner as you try and start the car and see if the engine TRIES to start.

Fuel pump test:

1. Get yourself a helper.

2. remove the gas cap.

3. have one person listen in the gas tank at the gas cap opening.

4. have the other person turn the ignition switch to the ON position ONLY so as the dash lights come on. Do NOT attempt to start the engine.

5. As soon as the ignition key is turned to the ON position, The person at the gas tank should hear the fuel pump run for TWO SECONDS and then it should STOP.

6. Does it ?.


If you do NOT hear it run, in most cases the fault is the fuel pump relay or the fuel pump..
