Cadillac Repair: Blower Motor, cadillac eldorado, battery disconnect switch

Question
QUESTION: Hello, I took my car ('98 Cadillac Eldorado) to the dealership for repair after it failed to start last week. According to the dealer the battery was being drained by my trunk pulldown motor as well as my blower motor shorting.

Now I understand the trunk, but the blower motor I am a bit unsure of. The dealer was asking over 800 in parts and labor to replace this and according to them the blower continues to drain the battery when the car is parked. Now if the blower motor was shorting wouldn't I hear the heat blowing after I turned off the car? When I picked the car up and opted that they only disconnect the trunk pull down motor, they showed me that the blower motor hose needed to be disconnected when leaving my car parked to avoid the draw. I understand that the disconnected hose cuts off the supply of heat, but wouldn't they have to do something with the wiring to prevent it from drawing. I am being told by other sources that if that was a major draw a) it wouldn't matter if the hose was disconnected because the hose is not related to electrical problems and b) I would continue to hear the blowing after the car was shut off.

What do ya think. Any helpful feedback would be appreciated

Thanks so much
Tom

ANSWER: Sounds extremly FISHY to me. If there was a fault in the blower motor it would either HOT to the touch or you could feel the blower spinning.

QUESTION: Thanks so much for your helpful response.

I'm thinking that what I may end up doing since the battery is being drained is to install a battery disconnect switch. I have been doing some research into this and I'm not sure if I need a manual or master switch and what the difference is between a locking versus non-locking cut off switch. What do you think? and how does it work. Does it automatically turn the battery switch back on when I start the car? Additionally, is this something I can install myself or does a mechanic have to do it? I'm not sure how much parts and labor would be for it...

I'd appreciate any assistance

Thanks so much
Tom

Answer
Do NOT install anything like this as you will be removing battery voltage from the computers which contain vital memory chips of information to start your car as well as maintaining it's driving abilities.

What you need to be is have an AMP METER put on the negative battery cable of the battery of which most any aut parts store will do for FREE and see how many amps your system is drawing from the battery when everything is shut off. Maximum amperage draw is approx 3/4 's of an amp.
