Cadillac Repair: 89 seville ignition, plastic gears, lock cylinder

my car key has been had to turn off the past few weeks and this morning i started the car and went to shut it off and i could not shut off the car the key turns freely but does not shut off car or start it  whats wrong

Answer
either the lock cylinder on the steering column where the key goes into is stripped or the plastic gears in the column are stripped or the ignition switch located under the dash mounted on the steering wheel is faulty..
