Cadillac Repair: 1993 Cadillac Deville Touring, cadillac deville, carbon residue

Question
When I started up my Cadillac, the check engine light came on.  I drove it a short distance and noticed that I had to put too much pressure on the excellerator just to keep it moving.  When I checked the onboard computer I got an error message E48 - then it showed ".E.E on the next screen, then .7.0 on the last screen.  I have since learned that E48 is the EGR Valve.  Where is the valve located? and how can I check it to determine whether or not it can be cleaned of carbon residue or whether is has to be replaced?  If it has to be replaced ... is this difficult or can I do it myself?  I don't know what the rest of the computer readout means (i.e. .E.E then .7.0) Can you explain? Thanks

Answer
E48 menas that you HAD atemporary fault that has corrected itself.

EE48 means that the EGR fault is there now.

.7.0 just means that you are at the end of the code display.

If you only have E48 and NOT EE48 you need to clear (erase) the code from the computer and see if the codes returns as an E or EE code.

To erase the code:

re-enter diagnostics and when you see .7.0  Simultaneously push and hold the OFF and HI buttons on your climate control panel until you see E.0.0 and release the buttons and see if the code reappears as either an E or EE code.

If it returns as an EE code, E-mail: onlineautohelp@msn.com for pictures which are NOT allowed on allexperts website and he can provide you with the necessary information to fix your problem.
