Cadillac Repair: 1988 Cadillac Eldorado door panel, cadillac eldorado, step by step directions

Question
I have a 1988 Cadillac Eldorado and the drivers side window is stuck down. My question is, how do I remove the door panel? My husband tried but couldn't figure it out. I'd like to get step by step directions if at all possible.

Answer
Kim,
To be honest, I can't tell you the exact placement of all the retainers etc. But I CAN tell you that generally speaking, there's plastic retaining clips that hold the panel to the door, and they will need to be removed with a clip removal tool or you will most likely damage the panel. Beyond that, there are usually screws hidden behind the door pull and sometimes the switch assembly and courtesy lamp. Start by removing the screws by the door pull, and then remove the switch plate assembly by popping the retainer clip on the one end with a small screwdriver. Once it's out, you can see if there's any screws that are hidden behind it. You'll also need to remove the mirror control if it's on the door panel. If it's cable-controlled, there's a set screw that secures it to the bezel, if it's electric, it's just a matter of disconnecting the harness. Once the screws etc. are removed, work around the panel edge with the clip tool, releasing all the plastic clips from the metal door shell, being careful not to tear them out of the door panel. The top of the panel usually clips onto the top of the inner door shell edge. I usually give it an inward/upward smack with the heel of my palm to release it.
That should pretty much be it. Good luck!
