Cadillac Repair: 1984 Eldorado 4.1 Service Now Light On, exhaust leaks, oxygen sensor

Question
QUESTION: The Service Now light has come on, the car hesitates under acceleration and has had some intermittent problems with warm starting. I checked the codes at the climate control and they ran as follows:
-1.8.8
44
52
-1.8.8
44
52
-1.8.8
44
-1.8.8
.7.0

Can you please help?

ANSWER: Code 44 means that the engine is running LEAN either due to a faulty oxygen sensor and or a weak fuel pump. Have the fuel pump tested for proper fuel pressure and if it is OK, replace the oxygen sensor.

If you have ANY exhaust leaks of the exhaust manifold or anywhere else Prior to getting to the oxygen sensor this will also cause this problem.

Once you get the probable leak fixed and or replacement iof the oxygen sensor or the fuel pump you need to CLEAR the code from the computer via the climate control panel.

NOTE: disconnecting the battery will NOT clear the computer codes.

QUESTION: Thank you. What is the procedure for clearing the codes?

ANSWER: Redisplay the codes again and when you see .7.0  simultaneously push and hold the OFF and HI buttons until you see E.0.0 and release the buttons. This will clear the codes.

The .7.0 is NOT a code and will always re-appear.

QUESTION: I read service bulletin T-88-141 regarding using top engine cleaner to remove build up on exhaust vales, which causes them to momentarily stick open. Could this cause the code 44 and sometimes difficult starting? I do have the (shudder, vibration under slight acceleration) symptoms referred to in the bulletin

Answer
Yes, you can use top engine cleaner and see if your codes disappear.

To erase the codes from the computer via the climate control panel:

1. Re-enter diagnostics and when you see .7.0

2. Simultaneously push and hold the OFF and HI buttons until you see E.0.0 and release the buttons.

3. This clears the codes from the computer.
