Cadillac Repair: damaged fuel line, inch gash, metal fuel


Question
I have a 91 deville,4.9. snow got under the fuel-line, pushed it to the ground, not it has a one inch gash and leaking fuel very badly.  it there 1. away to prevent this in the future, and 2. can this line be repaired by myself without replacing the entire line. lots of snow on the ground, and this will be an outside job?

Hi Larry,

       You can replace just a section of metal fuel line provided that there is a rust free section that can be cut out and flaired. You could use compression fittings or flair the ends it really doesn't matter with the metal line. What you need to stay away from is useing rubber hose because of the higher pressures and the need to flair the end of the metal line slightly so that the hose can't slip off. And the rubber hose is a specially made higher pressure hose that was used with the carburators because instead of 5-12psi the pump puts out over 40 psi when at full accelleration.

     There really wasn't any way to prevent this from happening except it the line were hanging down due to broken hangers and they weren't replaced.

      Hopefully you can get this repaired correctly to get home or make a temperary repair so a shop can make a safe permenant repair later. Bill
