Cadillac Repair: 94STS Seville Codes, clutch failure, powertrain control module, false sense of security

Question
QUESTION: I had my 94 scanned by a local mech. and torqe convertor clutch failure came up. Then I checked for codes and P039,T072,T077,and S071 came up I cleared them and then just T072came up again. Can you help me out and tell me what I'm in for.

Thanks

ANSWER: Jerry,
First of all, you did the right thing by pulling the codes and then clearing them. That's ALWAYS the first thing I do too. You don't want to waste time chasing intermittent codes. Especially when you have hard codes to contend with.
That being said, the codes you mentioned cover three different systems on your car. The "P" codes come from the PCM (Powertrain Control Module), the "T" codes are from the TCS (Traction Control System), and the "S" code is from the RSS (Road Sensing Suspension)
Unfortunately, all are codes that require not only a pretty decent working knowledge of the vehicle's onboard control systems but, also special diagnostic equipment.
I can walk you through the diagnostic procedures if you have a Tech 1 or Tech 2 and a good idea of how all the systems work and where they are located etc., but if not, I'm afraid you're going to be stuck with taking it to a local tech and having him diagnose it for you. I can certainly advise you based on what the tech tells you but I'm not sure how much else I can really do for you from a distance.
I CAN tell you that the one current code is pointing to a serial data fault between the TCS module and the PCM but beyond that, there's not much else to tell.
As far as the other codes not coming back, I'd have to ask if you've actually driven the car since clearing them or not? The reason I ask is that in many cases, codes only set after certain parameters are met such as specific drive times, vehicles speeds etc. So basically, if you simply cleared the codes and then rechecked without any drive time, you may be under a false sense of security about whether they will return or not.
Feel free to follow this up if you have any further questions or if you want to run a mechanic's diagnosis by me.

QUESTION: I went and took it for a ride then checked codes again. It read Po39 history, T072 History, T077 History, So71 Current, What do these codes mean. I'm guessing I did not clear them properly, and what was the torqe convertor clutch failure reading I got from the scanner, just a shift solenoid or something bigger cause I noticed a slight slip between 2nd and 3rd then immediately the check engine light comes on.

Answer
Jerry,
My guess would be the P039 is the result of the transmission performance issue you noticed. As far as the others, I can't say for sure if you're not confident you cleared them. In your first post, you didn't mention whether they were current or history, are they the same now as before? If so, I'd guess you just didn't get them cleared. To be safe, pull the battery for a few minutes and that will definitely clear them.
