Cadillac Repair: 1991 Cadillac Error Code, mobile mechanic, pickup coil

Question
I have a frustrating problem with my 1991 Sedan DeVille w/4.9L engine. I have had intermittent stalling. I checked the error codes and got E12, which seemed to indicate that I needed a replacement distributor pickup coil.

Well, I bought a OEM replacement coil and today a mobile mechanic service came by and replaced it. After he did the work, the car started but then stalled after about three minutes. I had cleared the codes, so I checked and again, got E12. The mechanic sprayed starting fluid into the carb and got it to start, but it now will not start without starting fluid. He says it is a fuel supply problem, i.e. the engine is not receiving fuel. Three different times I cleared the error codes, but the only code that comes up, every time, is E12.

I'm not sure how E12 relates to no fuel supply. Any ideas?

Thanks for any ideas!

Answer
E12 means that you have no distributor signal.

Fault could be:

1. Pickup coil.
2. Ignition module.
3. loose electrical connection.
4. Faulty computer.
