Cadillac Repair: 85 caddy 4.1 oil pan gasket, negative battery cable, pan gasket

Question
It looks like I need to tear down the whole front of this biarritz, what's the
best way to change this pan gasket, thanks, jeff

Answer
Hi Jeff,

The way we did them at the dealer was to remove the drive axle that went under the oil pan. Remove the starter and flywheel cover after disconnecting the negative battery cable. Then take a 13mm 1/4"drive swivel socket that was chrome and useing an extension and ratchet start loosening the bolts behind the front differential as well as the other obstructed places. The diff bolt could only be loosened a couple of turns and the rest done with your fingers. Then you cut a slot in the bolthead so a flatblade screwdriver is used to tighten it up. Don't forget to replace the oil pump o-ring because they like to dry up and crack. When that happens oil pressure is lost or reduced. Once all the bolts are removed you might need to pry the pan from the block and then tip it so it clears the diff. houseing.

      Hope that helps. Bill
