Cadillac Repair: Testing fuel flow/Pump output, pivot screws, trans fluid

Question
QUESTION: What's the best way to measure whether or not the fuel pump is performing right(Output).  Also what is the timing setting my on-car tag is unreadable.  I have a 1984 Seville w 4.1L gas.

ANSWER: check for 10 lbs of pressure and as far as flow rate, You should be able to fill a quart of gas in 15 seconds.

10 degrees

QUESTION: Would MAT Sensor failure and poor Fuel pump performance have similar symptoms?(Poor acceleration-Jerky Goes and than slows)  Kick -down acceleration nothing, engine whines put trans almost doesn't shift- and when it does you don't go anywhere.
ANSWER: A faulty MAT sensor would produce a check engine light illumination on the dash and a diagnostic code from the computer.

a faulty fuel pump would cause lousy, slow acceleration and so would a failing transmission. Check the trans fluid and see if it is a brownish color and has a burnt smell to it. If it DOES, You have a trans problem as well.

QUESTION: The trans fluid is slightly brn, (Not red like new fluid) I was hoping that was caused by a couple of episodes of engine overheating.(Remember FWD Seville)(I've since replaced Radiator and installed electric fan that cools down after shut-off.)  The car sat for at least 6 years before I bought it and some of the things I've experienced in the engine were caused by that(Had to replace lifters that were all gummed up solid(Bend a pushrod and one lifter ended up under the intake mnfld)I went through 2 rocker arm supports before I realized the frozen lifters were putting too much  upward pressure on the pushrods-the rocker arms couldn't break so the pivot screws loosened, the pivots broke and the pushrods jammed in the hardware and snapped the supports.)  The trans was shifting fine until this episode of lousy, inconsistent acceleration, and overheating.  MAT sensor code is in the diagnostic memory.  I'll try that first because it's only $24.  Is there anything I should do for the trans besides changing fluid & filter?  Are any of the additives of any use(Slick 50,etc.?)

Answer
Do NOT use any additives, Just change the fluid and trans filter and IF your LUCKY the trans will shift again, Hopefully.

Clear the MAT sensor code from the computer and see if it returns. via:

1. Re-enter diagnostics via the OFF and WARMER buttons and after the code displays and you see .7.0

2. Simultaneously push and hold the OFF and HI buttons until you see E.0.0   This will erase the E24 code.

3. turn OFF ignition, wait 2 minutes and start the engine and see if the code returns as an E24 or an EE24 code. If the code does not reappear, there is noyhing wrong with thw MAT sensor.
