Cadillac Repair: 1983 fleetwood wire wheel covers, fleetwood brougham, spare tire cover

Question
I recently bought a 1983 Fleetwood Brougham d'Elegance with wire wheel covers. I do not have a "key" for removing the one locking lugnut for each of the covers. Can you tell me how to find the key/socket so I can remove the covers. Thank you!

Answer
Hi Carl,

If you haven't done so already do a thorough check inside the trunk to include removing the spare tire cover and then remove the tire. Look with the jack and remove it if necessary to check around it. Pull back the trim inside the trunk on the sides by the hinges to make sure it didn't fall into the well on either side. Also check the front seat rear pockets. The key isn't very big...maybe 1 1/2" by 3" and has an L shape...so it is easy to hide.

I would call your local Caddy dealer and inquire if that key is still available. They might have one in stock if they are a huge dealer or else they could order one. They might have a differant color set and all you would need to do is get the old ones off and then install the new set. There is a big magazine called Hemmings Motor News that caters to older/classic cars. In there they have a Cadillac section and one of the people there might have the one you need. From what I remember there were aprox. 10 keys...a trip to a salvage yard/auto recycler might turn up the key you need. If you are coming up empty at this point try www.junkyarddog.com and enter the required info and with-in a couple hours you could get 10 or so responses to your e-mail for the key shipped to your door.

Hope one of those suggestions help. Bill
