Cadillac Repair: 1984 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham 4.1 fault codes, cadillac fleetwood brougham, cadillac fleetwood

Question
QUESTION: I followed instructions to clear the codes and see which one returns 3 times.  Fault code 45 returns along with the service engine soon and service engine now lights.  Can you tell me what this means?  Also, the car has acceleration issues on inclines, but runs ok downhills or on flat roads.  Still could be better though.

ANSWER: Redo the OFF and warmer sequence and when you get to .7.0

Push the cruise control lever to RESET and you will see .9.0

Push and releease the INSTANT AVERAGE button and you will see .9.5

Push and release the INSTANT AVERAGE button to increment the parameter numbers until you see .0.7

As you accelerate and decelerate the engine rpm's watch the display and you should see numers changing all the time.

As long as you see, At any time, some number LOWER tham .30 and higher than .60 the oxygen sensor is working OK and you need to check your fuel pressure.

If you do NOT see any numbers below .30 or above .60 replace the oxygen sensor.

QUESTION: Thanks, I'll check this now.  Additionally, I tried to run the car again yesterday and the performance is even worse.  The car will now only do 30 - 40 mph on any incline and when flooring the accel. the trans upshifts but still no power.  I now get fault codes 13, 33, and especially 39
ANSWER: eplace the oxygen sensor and you have most likely plugged up the catalytic converter and it needs to be replaced along with the spark plugs.

When you get this done recheck for codes and do NOT drive thje car until you get back to me. You can e-mail me at: onlineautohelp@msn.com

QUESTION: Ok, since all of this, I have replaced the Cat. and O2 Sensor Oil change.  The car runs better when cool.  Once it heats up it runs sluggish. When I start it up, it leaves black smut on the ground where the exhaust stains the ground and the Code is 33 and 45.  I know one is for the MAP Sensor but I cannot locate it.  Can you tell me where to locate this sensor?

Answer
The MAP and BARO sensors are located behind the passengers AC vent near the passengers door.

If you remove the glove box liner and use a mirror to look in back of the vent you will see BOTH of the sensors.

If the sensors are the ROUND metal  sensors BOTH MUST be replaced with the flat black plastic sensors.. The MAP sensor is the ONLY ONE that has a vacuum line attached to it from the engine compartment. Make sure that it does NOT have any GAS in the vacuum line and that thetre IS vacuum in the vacuum line from the engine.

Very common for ECM failure.

There is also the probability that the ECM is grounding out the injectors all the time instead of pulsing the ground to the fuel injectors flooding the engine.

I heard you replaced the cat in your other question.
