Cadillac Repair: Power Door Locks, 1989 cadillac fleetwood, power door locks

Question
QUESTION: I just bought a 1989 Cadillac Fleetwood Coupe with 3,000 real miles. I own an identical vehicle built 3 months earlier. It is like new except for a few issues.  The power door lock solenoids activate and the door locks open and close normally when one activates the power lock switches on the doors.  On my first car, the locks also close or open automatically in response to the gear shift position, i.e. when one places the shifter in Park, the locks unlock and when one places the gearshift in any drive position or reverse, the locks activate.  The car I just bought will not activate the locks in response to gearshift movements.

The new car is equipped with the GM dealer installed security system...Horn and door sensors and remote locking.  These all work correctly.  Does GM disable the auto locking feature with the Theft system installed? Or, could the mechanic have forgotten to connect a wire when he serviced the door locks recently?

ANSWER: Depends upon what he did to the door locks. Under the dash located on top of the sterring column is the LOCK/UNLOCK 2 wire electrical switch of which may be faulty or mis-adjusted.

QUESTION: The mechanic had to repair the lock system on the driver's side door.  A metal linkage bar that normally fit into a manual plastic sliding mechanism on the manual lock/unlock lever, had popped through the plastic.  (Someone may have tried to open the car with a Jimmie.)  Repair must have been simple.

I do not believe anyone played with the connector you referred to in your answer.  I have taken out the radio and there are a lot of radio associated wires lying in the area where the Delco Bose radio was.  BTW, I found two connectors that were not connecte to anything when I pulled the radio out.  Frankly, because both doors do the same thing, I believe the problem is not at the doors but at the source where you said.  Is there a sensor under the seat to sense if someobne is in the seat?

Answer
Check the switch on the steering column as I said. When you put the car in any forward gear the door locks lock automatically with this switch and UNLOCK the doors when put in park.

I can e-mail you a picture of the switch location and the test procedure. E-mail me at: onlineautohelp@msn.com
