Cadillac Repair: 2000 Cadilac Deville North Star, radiator hoses, air conditioner compressor

Question
My father would like to know how you remove and install the air conditioner compressor. Thanks!

Answer
Hi Bobbie Jo,

Replacing the A/C compressor on this car is rather involved. I don't have access to the Caddy manual so I checked the shop manual at work and they don't list the procedure so I will need to try and remember from memory.

Back when this model first came out there was a campaign so you might check if it had been done yet. Maybe you won't need to replace the compressor yourself.

These are the steps I remember doing:
1) Disable all the airbags in the SIR system.
2) Drain the antifreeze into a clean pan to reuse.
3) Recover the freon.
4) Disconnect the radiator hoses from the rad.
5) Disconnect the a/c lines from the condenser.
6) Remove the rad. and condenser as a unit
7) Remove the serpentine belt
8) Remove the a/c manifold pipe from the compressor
9) remove the bolts from the compressor and remove it.

Then reverse the order to reinstall. 2 ounces of the correct a/c oil will need to be added plus whatever came out of the old compressor needs to be added to the new compressor before it is bolted in place.  New a/c o-rings or seals need to be used on every connection that came apart. Once the rad. and condenser are reinstalled and hooked up the coolant needs to be added and topped off. The a/c will need to be evacuated for at least 30 minuets and then recharged. This is best done at a shop using the proper equipment. Enable the SIR/airbag system. Clear any codes that set.

      Hope that helps. Bill
