Cadillac Repair: Check Engine, cadillac coupe, oxygen sensor

I just bought a 1980 Cadillac Coupe de Ville. I drove it for about 3 miles and the check engine light came on twice in the 15 minute ride. What could it be and how should I proceed?

      The best thing to do would be to take it to your mechanic and have them scan for codes. That way you will know what to fix. It could be as simple as replacing an oxygen sensor or EGR valve not working correctly since you don't mention that the engine runs rough. I believe that your car doesn't have the capability to remember codes once the key is turned off so you might want to call ahead to the shop and if that is the case make sure to drive it until the light turns on and then head over to have it scanned. But don't turn the engine off once you get there.
