Cadillac Repair: 97 deville 4.6, number combinations, climate control

Question
QUESTION: On my '97 Deville, I have been getting a "refrigerant very low" warning with "A/C Compressor Off" warning.
Here's what I've done. Because the warning said very low refrigerant, the first thing we did was add some. The A/C control had disabled the compressor so I pulled the relay and by-passed it with a length of wire. The system took about 1/2 lb. and then the pressures were quite high so we didn't put any more in. The same warnings appear on the dash and the compressor does not start.
So, I suspect that whatever sensor (probably a "Refrigerant Level Sensor") tells the controller to disable the compressor is faulty but I do not know where such a sensor is located.
Can you guide me to the next step?
Thanks,
Phil

QUESTION: I pressed the "RESET" while the code was displayed on the dash but as soon as the "AUTO/ECON" setting is changed, the display returns.
Is a code set in the engine/body computer? Do I reset it with the diagnostic tool?
