Cadillac Repair: 89 caddy, port fuel injection, electrical schematics

Question
tom this is the first Question
i have recently installed a 1990 dville moter in my 89 dville ....idles ok then when put in gear ...no power...runs like shit.....some one says u have to reset computer...how do u do this.... Answer
Hi Joe,

Depending on what you did to retrofit the engine the problem just might be the computor itself and the prom. The reason being that the '89 engine was set up for throttlebody injection where as the '90 has port fuel injection. Or 2 injectors versus 8 and that is confuseing the computor on how much fuel to use.

The way I see it you eithor need to install the '89 intake manifold system on the '90 provided all the ports line up or change the ECM and prom from a '90 model and then make the wireing work. Bill

now tom fact is that the intake manifold was changed at time of motor swap because of the throttle body issue, the distibutor was changed ..like i said kinda runs good ideling sounds strong ......as soon as put in gear it wont even carry its own weight...and this motor from the 90 ran very strong ...i farted around with the timing ..advancing and what not ....runs a little better but reving out in park though.......can it be a computer issue and how do i reset it.......or whats your take on this problem.....please help....thanks in advance  joe

Answer
I NEVER advise people to swap different year engines due to just this type of problem. You can have so many different issues that you will always have problems due to different wiring sequences and differences in electronic components.

This is an area that I do not get involved in due to the many differences. I wish I could help you on this one, but without having BOTH vehicles electrical schematics and all the electronic component compatabilities if the will work on either engine, There is just no way for me to help you.
