Cadillac Repair: 1994 cad fleetwood, infrequent times, milisecond

Question
my fleetwood has 24,000 miles and is garage kept----this is a steering question---when driving at any speed the ''tension'' of the wheel or firm feel of steering will cut out for just a split second and will make the tension [feel]thats on the steering wheel go to a light or non exixstant feeling causing me to ''dart'' very quickly with the car--it just lets up for a milisecond and is back, like i explained , i will dart with the car when this happens but it always comes back [firmness or feel] and happens sporadic--[ i guess you could say the ''power'' of the power steering lets up for that mili second]...any ideas? thanks john

Answer
Hi John,

With your Fleetwood it is designed with a varriable effert steering in that at slow speeds you get maximun assist and the faster you go the less assist you will have. There is a pressure sensor on the p/s hose that tells how much pressure is being generated. Also it has trouble codes that are accessed through the climate control panel that could help isolate the problem. It could be a sensor or loose/dirty wire connection because of the infrequent times that it acts up.

Thats where I would start is with reading the codes. You will need a shop manual to navigate the codes and to follow the diagnostic trees to isolate the problem. I would recommend alldata.com because they provide professional repair info that is accessed by your computor and you should have everything you need info wise with a 1 year subscription.

Let me know if I can be anymore help. Bill
