Cadillac Repair: Changing the brakes on a 1994 DeVille, rear brakes, torque specs

Question
Could you please tell me how to change the brakes on a 1994 DeVille Concourse?

Answer
Hi Jamie,

Brakes are a safety issue and if done incorrectly a serious accident can happen. Even from time to time we will forget to pump up the brake pedal before driveing the vehicle off our hoist. With some furious pumping or putting the vehicle into park an accedent can be avoided but othertimes a wall is hit and a trip to the bodyshop is needed.

Since you didn't say if you needed help with the front or rear brakes my suggestion would be to have a shop do the brake job this time. For a future brake job you can make a call to your local junior college and ask about what automotive maintenance classes and the times they are offered. Usually a saturday session is offered for people that work durring the week. That way an instuctor can explain the correct way and propper procedures to do the brakes and can check the work after you have finished to make sure it has been done correctly.

If you really feel strongly about doing the brakes yourself then I would suggest buying a shop manual from your local auto parts store. A Chilton, Haynes or Motor manual will have the procedures, recommended tools and torque specs  to do the job properly.  You can read them over and decide if you are up to the job and have all the required tools.

Let me know if I can be anymore help. Bill
