Cadillac Repair: 1968 deville instrument lights, night illumination, external voltage

Question
A friend bought a 68 deville a few weeks back. The previous owner had (very poorly) installed a stereo system and car alarm that he brutishly semi dismantled. He tapped into existing wiring by removing cable shielding and twisting on the many alarm wires as well as remote power for his amplifiers. Since my friend has had it the charging system never worked.
We started simple. Old alternator tested bad, so we bought a new one and external voltage regulator. No change. I then used my multi-meter to check all the wires from alternator to regulator, back to battery, through the firewall, etc. Checked fuses. All the basic stuff.
The only difference made so far is at least now the "generator" dummy light comes on.
My only theory is maybe it's the ignition. Maybe it shorted out from the patching in job the former owner did on the red and pink wires running in. ?
My other problem is no lights in the dash. To clarify, the dummy lights work, but no night illumination. The tail lights are fine. The blinkers and hazard lights both function, but dont light up on the instrument panel.
So many questions at once, but I'd appreciate help anywhere you want to start.
Thank you,
Bryan
