Cadillac Repair: 91 Cadillac Seville Bose Radio, bose radio, cadillac seville

Question
Dear Michael:

My daughter's '91 Seville Bose radio began losing volume and the speakers crackled.  Left rear quit.  Today, I put in a used factory GM AM/FM cassette with the proper plugs.  The volume seems better on this one, but the right speaker gives a loud piercing shrill.  Effectively, I have no speakers working with this radio.  All I want to do is give her a fairly decent sound.  Is it possible that the speakers are not compatible with the non-Bose stereo?  Also, is there an easy fix to the Bose radio with a low volume, and might that be the best way to go on this.  I would be willing to just install inexpensive front/rear speakers if it were easy to do.  Ideas?  Thanks much for your help.

Andy

Answer
unfortunatly cadillac did not forsee the intallation of aftermarket/replacement radios when they introduced the bose sound in 1988.  The problem is that the new radio is not compatable unless it is a bose radio.  your caddy had four factory installed amplifiers one for each speaker so in order to install replacement speakers one would have to rewire all speakers seperately with an aftermarket radio unit.  I would reccommend locating a used Bose head unit as a direct replacement as that is going to be your easiest and least expensive option.  Try a local junk yard that is usually where I start
