Answer
Hi Paul, Something doesn't make sense here because there isn't a code E43 listed on a '86 front wheel drive DeVille. If you hooked up a scan tool to the ALDL connector there is a good chance that the scan tool isn't compatable with this car. I had an OTC Monitor 2000 that made digital dashes light up strangely so what I would do is use the car climate control to read the codes and then you can let me know what it is.

If it is a FWD DeVille what you need to do is start the engine and press the off and warmer buttons on the climate control for up to 5 seconds and the display will go into diagnostics. Watch the fuel data panel and tell me what the code(s) is. It should start out 888, then the E_ _ and then EE_ _ if the problem is happening when you are in diagnostics. To exit diagnostics just turn the ignition key off and the next time the engine is started it will be back to normal.

There are several wires that need to be bolted to the alternator bolt stud and if one of them was left off or the connector on the side of the alternator were dirty then that could be the reason for the code. And just because it is a new or rebuilt alt. doesn't mean that it is good. New parts out of the box can at times be defective.

Just out of curiosity how much did you want for your Caddy and where do you live? Let me know what the code is and if the car is an '86 FWD DeVille if you need more help. Bill
