Question -
okay, i bought a 1998 cadillac deville from a friend of mine who was having overheating problems, she last drove it in january of 06, and its been sitting in the driveway till about a week ago, she was having alot of problems with it, and took it to a place and got the following done to it :

water pump assembly, thermostat & gasket, radiator hose, water pump lube, front brake set, front break rotors, rear break set, rear break rotors, brake fuild, rear break calipers, new battery, RADIATOR assembly, check of oil and oil filter, check of air filter and breather filter, and cooling system and overheating diagnosis

now, i couldnt actually bring it to a place bc its not running, but i asked a mechanic friend of mine and he said since the northstars are aluminum engines, that they are prone to overheating, it could be a intake manifold, or a blown head gasket, my question is, is there an easier way to solve this problem? perhaps getting my coolant chamber flushed? maybe the fan isnt running? i dont know what to do, and thank you for your time.

Answer -
Check the computers for diagnostic CODES:

1. Ignition ON. Engine OFF.

2. Simultaneously push the OFF and WARMER buttons until the whole display illuminates and release the buttons.

3. Fault codes will start to appear with a LETTER and NUMBER combinations. Write down all the code #'s until you see .7.0

4. Turn OFF ignition.

5. Let me know what codes you find.

Answer
These engines normally run at 220 to 240 degrees and anywhere between these temps the fan will run.

You are going to have to have the engine pressure tested to check for blown head gaskets and I have a nasty feeling that this is what you are going to find.

As far as the codes go, Just ERASE them and they most likely will not come back because they are all HISTORY and not CURRENT codes.
