Cadillac Repair: diagnose rough ride, air shocks, tube compressor

Question
My 1989 eldorado rides like a boat, and on a rough road the shocks sound like they hit against some stops or something. are the shocks air shocks or is the level ride something seprate like on

Answer
Hi Rick, In the rear the shocks are air assisted if you still have the original setup and controlled by a height sensor and level ride compressor. In the front the struts are a standard strut...no electronics or air fittings. What can happen when the shocks or struts go bad is there is aprox. 1-2" of play before there is any resistance to move. So you could be hearing that noise. What you could do is bounce the car and listen for the noise. If you can hear it maybe with a helper one of you could place there hand on the spring to feel if that is where the noise is. Or isolate where the noise is comming from. Maybe the rear isn't pumping up to the propper height and is so will cause noises. You will then need to determine if the height sensor, air tube, compressor, wireing, strut or fuse problem exists.
