Cadillac Repair: computer code 741, torque converter clutch, tcc solenoid

Question
Dear Sir,

I have a 98 Deville with 62K miles.  The code 741 indicates a converter problem. Have had the trans serviced, but the service light still comes back on after about 150 miles of driving.  Problem is that the trans shifts perfectly under all conditions.  Local Cadillac dealer said that only way to fix the problem is with a $3000.00 rebuild.

What do you suggest?

Many Thanks,
Paul Foster

Answer
Actually the number is P0741 and the cause is in 8 out of 10 cases caused by the TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH (TCC) solenoid which is the solenoid that engages and disengages your overdrive in your transmission.

Unlees the transmission fluid is burnt and or discolored or the transmission is leaking from some gaskets or seals all that is required si removal of the transmission and replacement of the TCC solenoid.

There is a slight possibility that once the trans is opened up there may be other problems that cannot be seen until you physically inspect the components.

In this case the dealer is, And I don't blame him just covering his A** until he gets it down and physically inspects it.

There are many cases where a customer has a trabnsmission leak and if thy remove the trans and ONLY have to replace the TCC solenoid, The customer will come back in, In a few days saying that he now has a transmission leak that was never there before and that you people caused the leak even though he knows he had the leak PRIOR to taking the transmission out.

This is where his problem exists.

There is also the consideration of if the vehicle has high mileage on it.
