Cadillac Repair: transmission, pressure control valve, torque converter

Question
I have a 92 Sedan DeVille.  When I shift into gear, sometimes it will go into gear other times it doesn't.  When it doesn't, it feels as if it made an attempt.  When it does go into gear the trans works flawlessly. It is not low on fluid.  Is there something I can do without taking out the trans?

Answer
Hi,Felix
Ive heard of this before and common on the 92 devilles, there maybe a problem in 2 areas inside the trans, one is the trans pump has a failing pressure control valve causing fluid drainback from the torque converter,if thats the case then the trans will need to be removed for the repair, the other cause is a torque converter that is not recieving the fluid from the pump, either the snout or shaft from the torque converter is damaged, there again the trans will need to come out for repair,i have also seen a trans filter screen plugged, this you can check yourself by removing the trans pan and the filter to see if there is any material clogging it,also check the bottom of the pan for metal and burned clutch material, both good signs of failing pump or converter.hope this helps, also make sure you are checking the trans fluid with the engine running in park.
 Thank You
