Cadillac Repair: 1981 Eldorado, cadillac eldorado, gm dealer

My 1981 Cadillac Eldorado 6 liter 368 has the 8-6-4.  It had worked until recently.  While driving, it tried to  shift down from 8 to 4, when the car "bucked". Now the check engine light comes on everytime it tries to shift down.  The cruise control has also quit working.  The car now runs a little rough and seems to use more fuel.  What could be the problem?

Answer
Anytime the CHECK ENGINE light illuminates on the dash panel the cruise control is automatically disengaged by the vehicles computer. Once you fix the problem and the light goes out, the cruise will resume working.


There are numerous possibilities that can cause this problem and this will require extensive diagnsotics by a GM dealer.
