Cadillac Repair: Cadillac coolant level display, coolant level, computor

Question
The "Check coolant level" warning light on my '94 DeVille has begun to flash.  Even though I drive very little, I have replaced the coolant three times this month.  I don't see any liquid on the ground, and I don't smell anything.

Two questions: Is this a dire situation?
              Once the light starts flashing,
how many miles is it safe to
              drive?
Hope you can help.

Answer
Hi Ronnie, It sounds like the level sensor might be telling the computor that the level is low but it really isn't. When that light flashes it is trying to get your attention because the computor thinks the level is very low. What I would suggest is to check the coolant level to verify that it is at the full mark. Then unplug the sensor to see if the message turns off. If it does then the sensor is faulty and could be replaced. However having this sensor really isn't necessary unless you are the kind of person that doesn't check the fluids or do regular oil changes. So replaceing it would be your call. Driving with the low coolant message flashing isn't really a big deal. What is important is if the hot light starts to flash then you need to eithor pull off the road and shut the engine off or you could turn the heater on full hot and high fan speed and that might cool things down long enough to get home, work or a convient place the stop. Hope that answers your question. Bill
